What We Do

When to Use a Flatbed for Your Freight

Flatbeds are open-deck units purpose-built for freight that doesn't fit in an enclosed trailer. Oversized, heavy, awkward, top-loaded, or requiring crane or forklift access from above. When the load has dimensions or weight that exceeds a dry van's capability, flatbed is the asset.

Common flatbed loads: steel beams and coils, pipe and tubing, lumber and building materials, generators and compressors, construction and mining equipment, wellhead and oilfield components, prefab structures and modular buildings, and machinery that requires top-loading. If it's heavy, bulky, or has to be loaded from above, flatbed handles it.

Flatbeds also handle oversized loads that require permitting, route planning, and sometimes escort vehicles. OnPoint coordinates permits, legal load dimensions, daylight-only restrictions where applicable, and escort requirements when the load exceeds legal limits without special authority.

FAQ

Flatbed Freight Questions

A truck or trailer with an open, flat deck and no enclosure. Used for freight that won't fit in an enclosed trailer, requires top or side loading, or exceeds standard trailer dimensions. Deck lengths typically run 40 to 53 feet. Capacity up to 48,000 lbs on a standard flatbed trailer.

Up to 48,000 lbs on a standard flatbed. Deck length is 40 to 53 feet. Width around 102 inches. Oversize loads that exceed legal dimensions can be hauled under permit. For loads beyond 48,000 lbs or with exceptional dimensions, step-deck, double-drop, or heavy-haul configurations may be required — flag the specs when you request a quote.

Rates depend on distance, weight, cargo dimensions, and special requirements. Oversize loads that require permits, escort vehicles, or daylight-only driving carry additional cost. Most flatbed freight is priced per loaded mile with fuel surcharge and any applicable oversize fees. Request a quote for an exact number on your shipment.

Yes. Oversized loads that exceed standard legal dimensions (typically 8'6" wide, 13'6" tall, 53' long, 80,000 lbs gross) require permits from each state crossed, and sometimes escort vehicles and daylight-only restrictions. OnPoint coordinates permits, route planning, and escorts when required. If the load is legal to move on public roads with the proper documentation, we can get it there.

Yes. That's one of the main reasons to use a flatbed. Open deck allows top-loading with a crane, side-loading with a forklift, or ramp-loading for rolling equipment. Confirm the loading method when you request a quote so we dispatch the right unit and staging.

Often within 2 hours of confirming a shipment for standard loads. Oversize and permitted loads require more lead time for permit acquisition and route planning, typically 24 to 72 hours depending on the states crossed. 24/7 dispatch prioritizes urgent freight — call us directly at (813) 442-3001 for emergency flatbed dispatch.
